The controversial land dispute between former First Lady, Hajia Turai Yar’Adua and wife of the President, Dame Patience Jonathan has been settled by a court in Abuja. The said land remain the property of Hajia Yar’Adua.
The court, however, set aside the notice of revocation issued by the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed, purportedly revoking a plot of land allocated to Turai. In his judgement, after parties in the suit failed to reach an amicable settlement, Justice Peter Affen faulted the reason given by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory for revoking the land. He, however, held that the revocation was invalid, null and void.
The court held that the plaintiff’s right of occupancy over the 1.84 hectares of land remains valid and subsisting. According to the court, there was no regular and proper overiding public interest to warrant the purported revocation.
The land, Plot No. 1347, Cadastral Zone AOO, Central Business District, Abuja, FCT, was initially allocated to Women and Youth Empowerment Foundation (WAYEF) while Mrs Yar’adua was the First Lady.
The Minister of the FCT, Mohammed revoked the allocation for what he described as “overriding public interest” and reallocated the same land to Mrs Jonathan for the building of African First Lady Peace Mission Headquarters on November 2, 2011.
Having lost the case, the general counsel to the FCT however said that they would appeal the judgement. As we reminisce over this, I would love us to know that injustice anywhere (at any level) is a threat to justice everywhere says Dr. Martin Luther King. Or what do you think?
