The update, which bumps BBM for iOS to version 1.0.4, adds support for WiFi-only iPad devices, which means that users of a non-cellular iPad Air, iPad Mini or older-generation iPads can now download the BBM app onto their tablet. We've downloaded it onto our iPad Air, and it seems that Blackberry hasn't designed an interface specifically for the larger screen yet, with BBM appearing only as a blown-up version of the firm's iPhone application.
That's not all the update delivers, though. BBM for iOS also now allows users to invite BBM contacts to Groups via email, fixes an issue where some users would find some contacts missing, and adds a new Share Your Pin feature, allowing users to share their BBM login via Facebook and Twitter.
A Blackberry spokesperson said, "The BBM team at Blackberry has been working hard to bring the best BBM experience to all our customers. These new updates will introduce a few new features as well as addressing a couple of known issues."
Blackberry has also updated its Android BBM app, and while there's no tablet support, it adds BBM Contact categories, list sorting and filtering in BBM groups, and the same changes made to its iOS counterpart.
The BBM app for iOS and Android, although lacking in features compared to the Blackberry 10 version, seems to have been quite popular since its release in October. Blackberry claimed that after just one week the service had attracted 20 million active users.
The BBM app is available to download now for free from the iTunes Store and Google Play.
