Where the Law Protect Sex Workers and Wouldn't Protect Children From Rape

An 18-year-old sex worker claims she was held against her will and raped by a Cape Town couple for two days, according to a report on Monday.

She told the Daily Voice she was approached by a man on Main Road in Kenilworth last week, who took her back to his home and then refused to let her leave.

She said she was subjected to horrific sexual abuse.

The woman eventually managed to escape from the Belhar home on Friday and was seen running naked out of the house, screaming for help.

Captain Frederick van Wyk confirmed the couple would appear in court later on Monday on charges of rape and kidnapping.

"She identified the house and the alleged perpetrators and police then arrested a 52-year-old male and a 38-year-old female," he said.

However, sometime ago a 4-month-old baby and her 7-year-old brother were raped in Ceres at the weekend, Western Cape police commissioner Arno Lamoer said on Monday.

He said the baby had been sleeping in bed with her parents when a man snatched and raped her in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Her brother was in the house and raped at the same time.

Lamoer said it was believed that the man had been staying in the house, on a farm, at the time.

"The child is currently at the Red Cross Children's Hospital, where she had reconstructive surgery, and she will stay there for a long time," Lamoer told reporters on the sidelines of a police memorial service in Kuils River.

"As you can see, there is a sick society outside. Some men can't take the responsibility and we need to make sure this person is arrested."
