Hoodlums In Bayelsa Chopped Off Female NYSC Member’s Hand

When 26-year-old Folakemi Akinbode was waiting for her call-up letter for service to the nation under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, all she could pray for was not to be deployed to the Northern part of the country due to the fear of being caught up in the insecurity situation in the area.

But unknown to her, her jubilation at being posted to Bayelsa State and deployed to the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital for her primary assignment was cut short on Wednesday  when some youths, suspected to be cult members, attacked and almost chopped off one of her hands.

Akinbode, an indigene of Ondo State, a Batch A corps member and graduate of Nursing from the Madonna University, Elele in Rivers State, was attacked at about 8.30pm while returning to the Corpers’ Lodge near the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobori, near Yenagoa.

A Corps member, simply known as Fred, told LEADERSHIP Weekend that the attacked Corps member was posted to the University Teaching Hospital for her place of primary assignment, adding that the machete blow landed on her right hand while trying to fend it off.
