Wednesday is the start of Ramadan, beginning about 30 days in which Muslims will abstain from eating, drinking and practice abstinence from sunrise to sunset.
Mustafa Abu-Shwiemeh, Al-Nur Mosque’s religious leader, said Ramadan is considered a holy month, because it is when Allah revealed the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad.
“Every capable Muslim must fast during Ramadan,” Abu-Shwiemeh said. “This is also a time to give your stomach a break from eating.”
Ramadan is held during the ninth month of the 12-month Islamic calendar. The holy month begins when there is a sighting of the new moon. This year Ramadan will end Aug. 7 or Aug. 8.
Abu-Shwiemeh said the month is more than fasting; it’s also a chance for Muslims to feel closer to Allah.
“Muslims are encouraged to read the Quran this month. You’re recharging your memory with the words of Allah,” he said.
Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islamic Muslims follow. The first is to believe there is no god but Allah and Prophet Muhammad is his messenger, the second is to pray five times a day, the third is to give charitable donations to people in need and the fourth is to make a pilgrimage to Mecca once in life.
