The American who was gang-raped was identified only as a 30-year-old female. The gang-rape occurred in the resort town of Manali in northern India. Authorities issued alerts for the suspects and set up road blocks but so far no arrests have been made in the gang-rape.
The American woman who was gang-raped was picked up early Tuesday morning by several men in a truck as she was hitchhiking back to her guest house after visiting a friend.
The American gang-rape incident draws attention once again to a country where violent rapes seem to be occurring more frequently.
A Swiss tourist was gang-raped in March while on a cycling trip through rural India. Later that month, a British woman traveling in northern India was forced to jump out of the third-floor window of her hotel room after the hotel’s owner tried to force his way into the room and she feared she would be raped.
And last December, a young woman was gang-raped so severely on a bus in India that she ultimately died.
