May 25th as Africa Day

The African Union will be commemorating 50 years since the formation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). The celebrations, which are themed “2013, Year of Pan-Africanism and African Renaissance”, will begin in Addis Ababa on May 25, and will be followed by a year of celebrations across the globe.

The Africa group of ambassadors represented in the UAE will celebrate Africa Day with two events that will be held in Abu Dhabi. On May 25, Africa Day celebrations will take place at Officers Club from 10am to 4pm.

This action-packed event is aimed at promoting understanding and tolerance of different cultures, celebrating multicultural heritage and bringing into focus the strong relationship that exists between the UAE and Africa which is reflected through the participation of the UAE’s General Women Union in the diverse activities of the celebration.

The event will be attended by UAE society, school children, the diplomatic community and guests representing various organisations in the UAE and Africa. Activities at the event will include a cultural and art exhibition, African food presentation, children’s fashion show and entertainment, African dance and music and a raffle draw.

On May 26, a gala dinner on the occasion of Africa Day will be hosted by the dean of the African ambassador’s group, ambassador Hamid Chebira of Algeria.

This event is by invitation only and guests will include senior government officials, ambassadors and business people. Various cultural performances as well as a fashion show will form part of the programme.

The year 2013 also marks the completion of a decade since the formation of the OAU, which seeks to promote “an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in global arena”.

Pan Africanism reflects the long history of African civilisations as the cradle of humankind, and is at the heart of the formation and existence of the OAU and now the African Union.

It informed African responses to slavery and colonialism, the struggles for independence and self-expression and the post-independence processes of nation-formation.
