Shocking statistics reveal 28% of South African schoolgirls have HIV compared to 4% of boys – and government blames 'sugar daddies' sleeping with teenagers. The country's health minister Aaron Motsoaledi claimed the statistic 'destroyed his soul' and said action needed to be taken against the 'sugar daddies' targetting young girls.
Statistics show 94,000 schoolgirls fell pregnant across the country in 2011 with 77,000 having abortions at public facilities. According to Mr Motsoaledi many of the pregnant girls - who were aged between 10 and 14 - tested positive for HIV. Speaking at the National Council of Provinces Carolina, Mpumalanga, yesterday said: 'It is clear that it is not young boys who are sleeping with these girls. 'It is old men. We must take a stand against sugar daddies because they are destroying our children'.
Before you think, this is South Africa problem, think about your country. Mine is Nigeria, where we never have clear statistics, undermining the fact that having statistics is always the beginning of changing the tide of any epidemic. In Nigeria, am aware that in 2004, a certain University who ran a test for her new intakes discovered that;
"3 out of every 5 girls admitted tested positive for HIV".
I also discovered that;
"4.5 out of every 5 teenage girls in Bayelsa are mothers"
These and more are just the few statistics available to me. I know there are more. I don't just want you to state or analyse them. Let's see if we can proffer solution to save our generation.
What do you say?
