Federal Awards to Super Eagles: fraud or mere promises

Thompson Oliha, former Super Eagles midfielder, has lamented that he is yet to get the house promised him by the Federal Government for winning the 1994 Nations Cup in Tunisia. Could it be that those who won this year cup will be treated like that of 1994? Many Nigerians are asking, could this be another unintended promise or more seriously a by-product of correction?

In his own words Oliha was quoted to have said;
“...this is not coming from an individual but the Federal Government. Well, I’m terribly disappointed because even if I have 10,000 houses, the one my country gave to me remains the best as far as I’m concerned, it is an honour. Some of my colleagues who chose Abuja have taken possession of their houses while those of us who chose Lagos are still waiting.”

“Even (Stephen) Keshi, Wilfred Agbonavbare, Isaac Semitoje are yet to get too because we all chose Lagos.”

As for the National Honours confirmed on them in 1994, Oliha, a member of the 1994 World Cup Eagles squad has this to say.

“As I’m speaking, I don’t have any certificate to show that I’m a holder of the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) award. There was never a time we were formally presented the MON awards in Abuja since it was announced. I mean national honours award is always presented at an elaborate ceremony but nothing of such has happened, it is unspeakable.”

Now that the Federal Government has announced cash reward, plots of land and national honours again for the victorious Super Eagles class of 2013, Nigerians are watching. The truth is many Nigerians think it is another cheap talk from the seat of power. What do you think?
